PTSD & Trauma Therapy in Saskatchewan

Online trauma counselling across Saskatchewan, Alberta and Ontario

Trauma does not always show up as flashbacks or nightmares.  Sometimes it looks like being on edge, shutting down, reacting harder that you expected, or feeling disconnected from people you care about.  If feeling constantly tense or on edge has become part of daily life, anxiety counselling may also be helpful.

You might be getting through work and everyday life still noticing things like:

  • certain situations hit you harder than they seem like they should
  • you go from irritated or tense to completely shut down
  • sleep is lighter, more restless, or easily disrupted
  • you avoid people, places conversations, or memories because you know what they stir up
  • part of you still reacts as if something is happening now, even when you know you are safe

The gap between knowing you are safe and still reacting like something is wrong is part of what I explore in Why Do I Feel Like I Have to Be in Control ?

Those reactions usually develop for a reason.  The problem is when they keep showing up long after the situation that shaped them is over.

Trauma counselling helps you make sense of why certain reactions keep showing up, reduce how strongly they affect your day, and feel more in control of your sleep, relationships, and responses.

How Trauma Can Affect Everyday Life

Trauma can start changing the way you handle situations that used to feel ordinary.

In day-today life, that may mean:

  • A disagreement feels much bigger that the conversation
  • Being criticized, cornered or caught off guard sets off a reaction quickly
  • You avoid certain places, people, conversations, or situations because you know how you feel afterward
  • You pull away from your partner or family when you are overwhelmed
  • You stay busy or distracted because quiet gives your mind too much room to go back there

Sometimes you know why you react this way.  Other times, the reaction seems to happen before you have had time to make sense of it.

Trauma counselling looks at those connections so the past has less influence over what happens in your life now.

If anger has become one of the main ways this shows up,  anger management counselling may also be helpful. If the trauma is connected to something that happened through your work, you can also read about workplace trauma counselling.

Why Trauma Can Still Affect You Years Later

Trauma can change how your brain and body react to stress long after the original experience is over. That is why something happening now can trigger a response that feels much bigger that the situation seems to call for.

You may know logically that you are safe, but your body reacts first.  Your heart races, your muscles go tense, you go blank, get angry, or feel the urge to get away before you have had time to think it through.

That does not mean every reaction is caused by trauma.  It means past experiences can shape what your system learns to watch for, especially around conflict, criticism, loss of control, or feeling trapped.

If conflict or criticism sometimes leaves you blank, quiet, or unable to explain what is happening, Why Do I Shutdown in Arguments? looks at why that response can happen.

EMDR as Part of Trauma Therapy

EMDR is one approach I may use in trauma counselling when it fits what you are dealing with.

It can help reduce how strongly certain memories, images, body sensations, or triggers affect you now.

We do not jump straight into the hardest parts.  First, we look at what is happening for you, what feels manageable, and whether EMDR makes sense as part of the work.

Online EMDR can be provided securely by video and may be used on its own or alongside other trauma-focused approaches.
