Men’s Counselling

Online Counselling for men across Saskatchewan, Alberta and Ontario.

Most men I work with are not looking for counselling because they want to “work on themselves.”  They usually reach out because the way they’ve been handling things is not working anymore.

Maybe you can still handle a lot, but your patience disappears faster than it used to.  Maybe a normal question from your partner feels like criticism before you even had time to think.  Or maybe when a conversation gets tense, you go quiet, change the subject, or tell yourself, “It is what it is,” because you do not know what else to do with it.

You might recognize yourself in some of these:

  • You react bigger than the situation calls for, then afterward you wonder why it got that far.
  • The people closest to you say you seem distant, irritated, or checked out, even though you are still showing up and doing what needs to be done.
  • You keep telling yourself you will handle the next argument differently, but a few weeks later you are back in the same place.
  • You stay busy, scroll, work more, drink, or find something else to do because slowing down gives your mind too much room to start going.

These reactions are usually not random.  Anger, shutdown, defensiveness, avoidance, and checking out are often ways of dealing with something that feels too big, too uncomfortable, or too hard to put into words in the moment.

That does not mean the reaction is not causing problems.  It means understanding what is driving it gives us a much better place to start changing it.

Men’s counselling with me starts there.  We look at what happened right before the reaction took over.  What did you hear in what was said?  What made your patience disappear?  What made you want to shut the conversation down?  Once we understand that, we have somewhere useful to start.

You can start with a free 20-minute consult to see whether men’s counselling would work for you.

How men’s counselling works

Men’s counselling with me starts with what is happening in your life, not trying to tell your whole story perfectly. We might start with argument you keep having, the moment you lost your patience, the conversation where you went blank, or the thing you have been replaying since yesterday.

From there, we break down what happened to understand why your reaction made sense in the situation.

You do not need the right words. We can start with the part you do know.

You do not need to know exactly what to talk about or what you want to change.  It is okay just to know something needs to be different.

Maybe the clearest place to begin is the argument that keeps happening, the irritation you feel, the fact that you shutdown when things get tense, your not doing the things you normally do or not handling things like you normally would.

When we work together, if you go quiet, say “I don’t know,” joke something off, or tell me I’ve got it wrong, that gives us something to work with.  I’m not going to push harder just to get you to open up.

We look at what changed in that moment.  Did something feel like criticism?  Did you lose the words?  Did you feel blamed, cornered or just done with the conversation?

Sometimes the reaction makes more sense once we understand what was happening for you.

The goal is not to just understand yourself better.  It is to change what happens next.

That might mean catching the irritation earlier, staying in the conversation instead of checking out, recovering faster after an argument, or having your partner notice that something is different.

What Men Often Want Help With

This page is for you if you know something isn’t working, even if you can’t yet explain why.

Men often seek counselling for:

  • Getting anger or irritation under control before it damages work or relationships
  • Handling conflict without blowing up, defending everything, or shutting down
  • Feeling more present with a partner, kids, or family
  • Figuring out why stress and pressure are getting harder to manage
  • Changing habits used to switch off, avoid thinking, or get through the day
  • Stopping the cycle of trying to change, doing better for a while, then ending up back in the same place
  • Feeling stuck, numb, or unsure what’s next in life

You do not need a diagnosis or a perfectly organized story to start.  Knowing that the way you have been handling things is not working the way you want is enough.  We figure out where to start from there.

Virtual men’s counselling in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario

I provide secure online men’s counselling across Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Ontario.

Virtual sessions can make counselling easier to fit around long workdays, shift work, family responsibilities, or living outside a majour centre.  You do not have to drive into the city, sit in a waiting room, or rearrange half your day to make an appointment work.

You can join from somewhere private where you feel comfortable talking, whether that is at home, at work, or somewhere else that gives you enough space to focus.

If your schedule changes from week to week, we can usually find a time that works.

I work with men in Regina, Saskatoon, rural Saskatchewan, Calgary, Edmonton, and communities across all three provinces.

What If You’re Not Sure You Want Counselling?

You do not have to be convinced counselling is the answer.

Maybe your partner has been asking you to come.  Maybe your doctor suggested it.  Maybe you are here because things at home or work have reached the point where something need to change.

You can still show up unsure.

I am not going to spend the session trying to convince you that you need therapy.  I would rather hear what you think is happening, what other people are concerned about, and whether there is anything you want to be different.

If something I suggest doesn’t fit, tell me.

I don’t need you to agree with me to make therapy work.

If I misunderstand something, correct me. If a strategy sounds ridiculous for your life, we’ll find another one. If we’re talking about something that doesn’t feel useful, say so.

I’ve been doing this long enough that I don’t need to be right about you. I need to understand you well enough that what we’re doing is actually useful.

Men’s Counselling – FAQs

No. We focus on what’s actually happening in your life – your reactions, patterns, and stress points. Feelings come up naturally as part of understanding what’s going on, not because you’re forced to talk about them.

That’s normal, especially if this is your first time in therapy.
You don’t need the right words to start; part of the work is slowing things down, putting words to what’s been fuzzy, and figuring it out together.  I’ll help get the conversation started, and most men are surprised by how much they end up talking once things get going, especially the ones who swear they won’t say much.

Men’s counselling (online therapy for men) with me is not venting in circles.
We use what’s happening in your day-to-day life to understand what’s really going on

and make practical changes so you can react less on impulse and feel more in control.

No. You are the expert on your life; my role is to help you understand what’s behind your reactions and what your options are.  We decide together what to focus on and at what pace, so any changes fit your life instead of being a list of “shoulds.”

Yes, online counselling can work very well for men, especially if privacy, travel, or long work hours make in-person sessions difficult.  Many men find it easier to open up when they’re in a place they know, which can make virtual sessions more focused and less stressful than driving to an office.

Men’s counselling (online therapy for men) is a good fit if something in your life, relationships, or behaviour isn’t working and you’re tired of repeating the same patterns.  You do not need a label or diagnosis; you just need some willingness to look at what’s going on and consider a different way of handling it.
